Back to Trajan's markets.
Only, this time, with friends, a guide and by night, so I could pester and swear about lighting.

Just like last time, we were told that pictures are stictly forbidden inside the main building so - of course - here is the proof that, as usual, I respect this type of diktat:

(Yeah, I know, I had already taken that picture by day but, hey, I claim provocation.)

The market was packed with tourists. We were treated to a - very - brief tour of the place. Not entirely satisfactory but I suppose that hording a group in the dark on this type of pavement can be tricky (even assuming that the tourists had done the sensible thing and worn flat shoes which - obviously - a large part of them had not):

It wasn't all pitch dark, though

The building at the upper right, with the arches if the house of the Knights of Malta. They have one hell of a fabulous loggia with view on the Forum (and on the market).

That view:

Hey! It's the typewritter!

But probably not that one, which is the famous column of Trajan, depicting his successful campaign against the Daci (some folks in Romania, which is just to prove that the Romans ALWAYS have had something against the Romanians):

Another view sans column:

The squarish building at the back is Palazzo Venezia.

As you can see most of the area is still in excavation because, in fact, the complex is several markets built on top of each other.

A view from the main entrance buiding which you shall not take in pictures... Whatever...

(Apparently the renovation works are covered by copyright. Sounds a little abusive to me, but law is often abused in that way)

The best part of the evening?
The pizza I had afterwards.
